Q & A of the Male Student Nurse

After reading a fellow nursing student's latest entry, Nurse Betty, I suddenly have a fire in my belly to write.

Top Five Questions Posed to Too Fat the Male Student Nurse
(
& my smarta** responses)
Wouldn't you like to be a cop instead?
Instead of what? People not shooting at me? My two brothers are cops and they are really good at what they do. Not my kind of fun.

Why don't you want to be a doctor?
Oh sure. Usually the people who ask this question have no clue what kind of lifestyle doctors REALLY lead. Sure the money is good but their family life sucks. Ruined weekends, vacations, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Doctors are on-call 24-7. Trust me... I am the son of a doctor... it isn't all what it is cracked up to be.

What? Are you gay or something?
Although there is nothing wrong with the gay lifestyle, no... this does not mean I am nor will it make me gay. So I guess that makes me something.

Aren't you concerned that people will not see you as a real man?
Well sh*t. I'm 6' 2" tall, 290 lbs, and have obvious facial hair. I'm pretty sure I won't be mistaken for a woman. The question about my sexual orientation was amusing but now you're questioning my gender?!

I'm going to be a Radiologist... I guess that will make me your boss one day.
Yes. I've actually had someone say this to me. My response, "Guess again, ego boy!" There is a difference between dependent interventions that a nurse carries out (a.k.a. physician's order) and actually answering to the physician as a superior. Unless a nurse is EMPLOYED by a doctor... the doctor is most certainly NOT a nurse's boss.

The last encounter was my favorite... what a shmuck! LOL

  1. While Florence Nightingale did a great thing for medicine when she started her whole hand washing kick she did a bad thing when she established nursing as a woman's profession. The feminization of nursing is a real problem and I applaud any man who comes to it.
Question: what is the difference between the intimate touching of a male obstetrician and the intimate touching of a male obstetric nurse? They are both clinical and purposeful. The assumption that the nurse must be a pervert but the dr. is not by merit of his position is ridiculous. that is an image problem of the profession.

  4. In my nursing class of 128, 4 are men. I have had the privledge to get to know them and the honor of working alongside them in clinicals. It is very disappointing to see them get asked to do all the heavy lifting and all the male caths and none of the female caths. I have a tremendous respect for them and you. Great post-I will have to share it with them and add you to my blogroll.
