"Paging Doctor Stereotype!"

Too busy to really write anything but I thought I would add this...

During morning coffee and entertaining the kiddies I found myself thumbing through one of the billion scrub catalogs I find myself receiving these days. They're all the same. Twenty pages dedicated to women and the last 2 pages have scrubs for men (token).

This one particular catalog has about ten illustrations of men modeling scrubs and they are all using one of two male models (a white model & a black model). I couldn't help but notice that there was only one picture with an obvious RN emblazoned on the breast pocket... and it was the black guy. There were no other pictures of obvious male RNs... especially not one of a white guy!

As a matter of fact all the pictures of the white male model had D.D.S. or M.D. stitched on his shirt.

[Insert forced, sarcastic laughter for an obvious reinforcement of stereotype here.]

On the flip side...
I have had two med-surg clinicals & both times I was addressed as "doctor" at least once during each shift. Once by a patient... and once by an RN?!

  1. So...you will be offering yourself up as a sacrifice to model scrubs for your species, then, no? :)

The (lone remaining) gentleman in our class is constantly called "Dr." by everyone--patients and nurses alike.

To be fair, I was called doctor twice (perhaps because I was wearing the white coat which is part of our optionals costume? You think YOU laughed...ha! I bet you could hear me in Mufreesboro! Remember? It was back during that first week of May...

    Hh

    P.S. I've BEEN to Murfreesboro!

  2. I am tucking all this away in my database where i keep all my research to right the wrongs done to male nurses everywhere. I have been doing a lot of research in this area lately and really find it fascinating how a gender has been ascribed to a profession. I mean c'mon people have characteristics not professions. When I am through and have written my doctorate thesis on the subject I am going to dedicate it to you, my dedicated blogging NURSING buddy

  3. Let me know if you need me to fly anywhere to help you defend your doctoral thesis!

  4. I have my first male nursing professor this semester. I think he's really nice so far. When I get to know him better, I may ask him his thoughts on male nursing and the stereotypes.

  5. I have also been referred to as doctor when I wear my white coat as a NP student. You can better believe I quickly correct them. Most actually say that they prefer NPs anyway!

  6. Ha! It is a very surreal experience to be referred to as a doctor. Its like you are suddenly taken out of your nursing reality and need to find a way to explain your role. Sometimes it works and sometimes they (patients) just go along as if you never corrected them at all.

I would prefer NP as well.
