It is a giant load of bull-hooey that the current administration has collected domestic phone call data. There were (at the time of 9/11) and still are legal government programs in place that can provide the government the information they need in their anti-terrorism efforts... and with judicial oversight.
And now we have the situation of privately owned companies in bed with the government. Verizon and BellSouth have violated the trust of their customers by supplying data on domestic calls to the NSA. I emailed both companies and expressed my disgust.
Golly Gee Dubya's explanation that the data is being handled responsibly is a joke. Since when does the government ever show restraint and responsibility without oversight? The NSA program is nothing more than the Bush administration grabbing power to stifle their critics as evidenced by the latest from ABC News. Brian Ross of Nightline is reporting that the Bush administration is all ready using the data to track down anonymous government sources (aka leaks) to the media on stories that have nothing to do with terrorism.
I had a friend several years ago tell me Republicans fall into three categories: Stupid, evil, and stupid & evil. Bush is not just a dumb president but a dangerous one.
And one more thing. Don't believe Verizon and BellSouth when they deny giving your personal data to the government. I strongly suspect they are lying out of convenience and the only way to get to the truth is to either declassify the domestic spy program or violate Bush's version of national security. With anonymous sources being hunted down I think the former is more likely.
I know one thing. I'm getting rid of all my Verizon and BellSouth products pronto!
